Pennsylvania Democratic Party Response to Governor Tom Wolf's Line Item Veto

HARRISBURG, PA— In response to Governor Wolf's decision to use his line item veto power to block the Republican legislature's irresponsible budget cuts, while directing emergency funding to our schools and human service departments, Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chairman Marcel L. Groen released the following statement:

"I applaud Governor Wolf for putting Pennsylvanians over politics, and vetoing the Republican legislature's grossly irresponsible budget. He continues to stand by Pennsylvania's students and teachers by fighting to pass historic investments in education funding.

"The Republican budget cuts $95 million from Pennsylvania's schools. It fails to provide any funding for some of our outstanding institutions of higher learning-- leaving schools like Pitt, Penn State, and Temple out to dry. And on top of everything else, it fails to address Pennsylvania's looming structural deficit.

"Instead of taking this opportunity to make historic investments in the future of our commonwealth, Republicans in Harrisburg chose to walk away from a compromise budget that all parties agreed to and instead, stick to a status quo which has resulted in five credit downgrades and hampered Pennsylvania's economic growth.

"I call on the House and Senate to get back to work and to stay in Harrisburg until they finish the job they started and pass a responsible budget. I call on Speaker Turzai to bring Senate Bill 1073 to the floor for a vote. The people of Pennsylvania want their legislators to stop the shenanigans and get the job done."
